Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts Art Display

March 11 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm

Be a part of Sturgis Library’s April art display!

In a project inspired by Crystal Wilkinson’s memoir and cookbook, Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts, Sturgis Library is exploring the ways that family recipes hold our history and pass it on through the generations.

To that end, we are inviting patrons to share a favorite recipe that was handed down to them and the stories that dish evokes. The Library will exhibit art inspired by these recipes in our display areas throughout the month of April.

People can participate in either of the following ways:

1.) Bring a copy of your written recipe and family photos to the craft night on 3/11/25 at 5:30 where participants will share memories with one another and create art using provided materials. Sign up below.

2.) Make art inspired by this project at home and bring it to the Library by March 29th.
To sign up for this option, email Gabrielle at reference@sturgislibrary.org

A few things you might think about while creating your piece:

  • How does this recipe represent my cultural heritage?
  • Why did my ancestors use these particular ingredients?
  • How has this recipe changed over the years?
  • What do I feel when I eat/smell this dish?
  • Who does this recipe remind me of?
  • How do family recipes relate to the concept of America as a melting pot?
  • How does food connect people?
